Garments Industry History in Bangladesh

Clothing is the second human basic right. We cannot live properly without clothing. We wear clothes for maintaining modesty and protecting our body from harshness. In the primitive period the people’s use plant’s keepers and herbs, barks, animal’s skin etc. Later people gradually learn to use fiber, yarn, filament and fabrics. But we still do not know when or where first used cloth.

Charles Fredrick who lived in England first invented the sewing machine in 1755. It was a hand stitch machine. Issac Merrit Singer invented a commercially successful sewing machine in 1851. Famous Japan’s sewing machine company Juki was established in 1945 in Tokyo. 

The first garment factory was established in Paris, England with 80 machines for Army Uniforms in 1829. Later in 1856, John Beren operated a garments factory in Britain with 3 machines. 

Garments Industry History in Bangladesh, the first garment factory was established in 1960 at Urdu Road in Dhaka which name is Reaz Garments. Reaz garments sold their products in the local market for about 15 years. Reaz garment first exported 10,000 pieces of shirts in England in 1967. It was the first foreign export of garment from Bangladesh. In Bangladesh, the first export-orientated company was Desh Garment LTD. It was established in 1979. It was a non-equity joint-venture company. Desh Garment had a collaboration with Daewoo Corporation of South Korea.

Bangladesh started in the world market exporting 0.1 billion takas in 1981-1982. After 10 years later, in 1992-1993 the export of garment industry reached to 1445 million U.S dollar. Then, the garment industry has grown very rapidly. At present, exports over 34.13 billion dollars in the 2018-19 financial year which is 84% of the total export earnings of the country.

Garment numbers were 384 in 1984-1985. Then 10 years later in 1994-1995 garment numbers were 2182. In 2018 garment numbers were 4560.

Men’s and women’s shirts, sweaters, t-shirts, jackets, trousers, shorts produced in the Bangladesh garment factory. These garments are exported to various countries but sizeable quantities of garments are exported mainly America, Canada, EEC and other European countries. Bangladesh readymade garments are exported to Australia, Belgium, Germany, France, Hongkong, Italy, Japan, Norway, Switzerland and Middle-East. These countries play an important role in our economy.

With the progress of the garments industry, the textile sector is also being increased. because in garments making. Yarn and fabrics are used as the main raw material. Besides these, many more associated raw materials are required, like – button, interlining, polybag, carton, board paper, scotch tape, zipper etc. The industries which are required for making these raw materials are called backward linkage industries.

Bangladesh apparel industry faced a crisis after the Tazreen fire and Rana Plaza collapse in 2012-2013. Fire and worker safety issues came in the font. After that problem, National Action was formed to ensure workplace safety. The building was not safe or set up in an unplanned way relocating them to safer buildings. A project has been taken to set up the industrial park by the Government for the garment industry beside Dhaka-Chattagram Highway so that the garment industry would be able to relocate. Bangladesh workplace safety and fire issues are solved with help of the Government, BGMEA, BKMEA, investors and global brands.

Again, the apparel industry is going rapidly and become the second-largest exporter of Ready-Made Garments (RMG) in the world. Bangladesh apparel industry again faced a crisis for corona-virus. 315-million-dollar order postponed for corona-virus. A large number of orders cancelled for corona-virus. But the Bangladesh government took the necessary step to run a garment factory with a proper health issue. Gradually improving garment industry condition, the buyer comes backing again with the order. Hopefully again Bangladesh apparel industry will move faster like before.
